St Johns Soldiers Hill Precinct

St John’s is situated in Armstrong St Nth, 10 minutes walk from the centre of Ballarat.

The large property, approximately 5200 square metres, is facing both Armstrong St Nth and Lydiard St Nth.

It comprises a Church built in 1864. One of the features of the Church is a series of stained glass windows. These depict the life of Jesus. Another feature is the lychgate at the entrance to the church grounds. The organ has a heritage listing.

In the grounds of the church is a seat for people to sit on and meditate in the memorial garden. It is a peaceful place where the ashes of past parishioners are interred.

The Rectory, constructed in 1982/83, has 4 bedrooms, a lounge and dining room, a kitchen and family room and a study and a two car garage. The home is well looked after and has been painted, had new carpets and curtains fitted, and other relevant repairs carried out during the interregnum.

The Parish Centre comprises two meeting rooms and an excellent kitchen.

The third building on the site is the Memorial Parish Hall. It is a large hall with stage and several side rooms. It faces Lydiard St and is used entirely for the Opportunity Shop. The Opportunity Shop is open for business Wednesday to Friday and staffed by volunteers.

Situated on another site in Armstrong St are the St John’s Must Homes. These are four 4 units occupied by elderly members of the community. The Parish is responsible for the day to day running of the Units and the pastoral care of the inhabitants. The ownership is shared by the Parish and the Must Trust which is part of the Diocese of Ballarat.
